The city grew to become a Heart for ginning and milling area agricultural products. The city's most noteworthy founder and early settler was Gen. Edward Burleson, a hero of the Texas Revolution and previous vp from the Republic of Texas. Burleson crafted a dam on the higher reaches of the river in 1849. The dam powered several mills, including just
